Best features of this standing desk

Smooth and quiet motor

This standing desk is powered by a motor mechanism that allows you to move the tabletop up and down, changing the height of the desk. Electric standing desks can be noisy sometimes, but we are happy to say that the Vivo Desk-V102E does not have this problem.

Users have claimed that the single motor transition is very smooth and quiet; making this a good choice if you work in a silent office environment.

Available frame only

The Vivo Desk-V102E standing desk is sold as a frame only option. This is great news for those of you who prefer to make your own tabletop or purchase a different one separately.

Maybe you prefer having a customized desktop with lots of grommet holes for cables, or maybe you just have a spare tabletop lying around from a previous standing desk. Either way, if you decide to go down the frame-only route, the recommended dimensions for the table top is a length of 45″ to 85″, depth of 24″ to 44″, and a thickness of 1″ or greater.

The warranty period for the frame-only version is the same as the complete standing desk – 3 years warranty.

3 programmable height presets

Having programmable presets to easily access your favorite heights for sitting and standing will surely enhance your experience of using the standing desk.

This desk has 3 memory presets you can program into it via the attached controller. Apart from that, there are also reminder alarms to notify you to stand, sit, or simply change position. I especially love the reminder alarms!

After all, to get the most out of the benefits of having a standing desk like better blood sugar levels and improved heart health, you have to keep moving. Simply standing still is only slightly more beneficial than sitting still.

Anything that encourages more movement like sit-stand reminders or even under-desk treadmills (find out how to choose the best under-desk treadmill here) is a positive feature.

Easy assembly

Assembly is a breeze with the Vivo Desk-V102E and all the hardware needed for assembly comes included in the package. It also comes with free shipping and the shipping weight is a manageable 56.5 pounds.

To give you a sense of what the assembly process is like, we have linked the assembly video below.

Reasonable price

Standing desks are generally not cheap items. So if you are new to standing workstations or a student on a budget, it can be painful to put down hundreds of dollars for a desk that you may not even enjoy using.

This is where sit stand models like the Vivo Desk-V102E come in handy. It is affordable enough to purchase as a trial standing desk, or even if you just need a basic standing desk to lightly use a few hours every day.

At under $300 for the frame, this desk frame is certainly among the cheapest options for a full height adjustable frame.

Good customer support

This standing desk undeniably has a few issues as we will outline below, but sorting out any difficulties won’t be a problem as the VIVO customer service team is very responsive.

They have addressed many user reviews online, particularly the negative ones with helpful advice and the ability to contact customer support. Even though finding defects or missing parts on delivery is a somewhat common problem, customer service has sent spare parts to the buyer promptly.

The same applies to software issues with the controller. It is not clearly stated in the manual on how to reactivate the screen after it goes to sleep (long press M button), but users quickly solved this puzzle by contacting support. Also, the live chat on the VIVO website has been reported to be very helpful.

Although not directly related to the desk itself it is always comforting to know that the product you buy has a company behind it that is willing to look out for its customers.

Possible issues, but not dealbreakers

Not very low adjustability

If you are planning to use the V102E as a sitting desk, it may be too high to sit comfortably if you are of a shorter height. Several people have complained that they found the desk to be too high, thus needing to make adjustments by getting a higher chair.

As desk height is truly important to support a healthy seating posture, having a desk that is too high to be comfortable defeats the purpose of an ergonomic sit-stand desk. For comparison purposes, only 10 other desks on our list of 50+ Standing Desks Compared and Contrasted have a minimum height that is taller than the Vivo V102E.

For a standing desk with similar specs but a lower minimum height setting, we recommend taking a look at the Autonomous SmartDesk 2 – Business which has a lowest height setting of 23 inches.

Lack of stability

Unfortunately, stability seems to be a small problem with this standing desk. Even with the reinforced steel footings, several user reviews have mentioned issues with wobbling, especially at higher heights when using the desk while standing.

This is a major drawback as good stability is one of the defining features of a good standing desk worth buying. One user also complained that one leg became shorter than the other after a few uses, making it even more unstable as it tilted to one side.

That being said, some wobbling may not be an issue for you if you only have a laptop or a small desktop to place on the standing desk. However, if your equipment weight reaches close to the 176-pound weight capacity, the wobbling may become an issue. If you are shorter and won’t be extending the frame to its maximum height, then this probably wont be an issue for you.

As with most things you get what you pay for. There are certain desks with extremely good stability throughout the adjustable range, but some of these have a price tag over $2000!

Remember, the stability will be affected by the kind of tasks you are planning to do at your standing desk. Activities that involve a lot of movement, such as gaming or fast typing, will make this standing desk wobble more than the occasional click or casual web browsing.

Our advice is to assess your needs. If you need a highly stable workstation, keep looking for another standing desk as a wobbly desk can be rather frustrating. One desk that is still affordable and has been given great ratings for its sturdiness is the Fully Jarvis.

Inaccurate height adjustments

A small but annoying complaint some users have made is with the lowering of the desk. Every time the desk is returned to its lowest position, it does not go all the way down.

As a result, the lowest position of the desk becomes increasingly higher every day! As it is, the minimum height of the desk is high at almost 29 inches. The height adjustment flaw makes the minimum height even higher over time.

The only way to fix this problem is by resetting the entire desk – which is not difficult, but a little annoying to do constantly. Depending on how many times a day the desk is moved up and down, it may require frequent resets. One person mentioned every other day resets, and someone else had to reset monthly.

We have seen this complaint only a few times and trust us, there are plenty of positive reviews that offset this.

It is also difficult to correctly adjust the height to a specific number, as you have to hold down the button to change the height. This really isn’t a problem – but some desks allow you to select a height, for example, 46″ which many people like.

Apart from that, the control panel can’t be turned off intentionally. The display goes to sleep automatically, and you have to press and hold M to wake up the controller.

If you would like to avoid such tech annoyances completely, you might want to get a manual standing desk, which is typically operated via crank or pneumatic adjustment systems. There are other considerations to take into account when choosing between manual or electric as we have outlined here.

Defects on delivery

There have been some issues with the desk being delivered with a few parts missing, such a screw or a bolt.

As we mentioned before however, the company is very quick to reply to all queries and the customer support will be ready to help you out!

To sum it all up

After weighing up the pros and cons, the Vivo Desk-V102E may not be the most impressive standing desk, but at its price, it is certainly a good starter desk worth considering.

Ultimately, it is one of the cheapest electric standing desks on the market. If you are looking for a basic desk to have all the benefits of an electric standing workstation, this may be worth a shot. Just be aware that of some of the issues we outlined.

As an alternative, you may want to invest a little bit more in a standing desk that has a better reputation to back it up, for example, the E1 Single Motor from FlexiSpot. This is an electric standing desk that has slightly better specs and gets more positive reviews overall.
