Finding the best laptop stand of 2018 was something I had to do. A couple of months ago, I started having constant neck and shoulder pain. I consulted a doctor and the first question he asked after examining me was “How much time do you spend on your computer every day?”. Which much to his horror I replied, “Oh, roughly about eight to ten hours each day.”
There, was the cause of my pain – the constant slouching and poor, neck straining position I was at for at least half a day and it wasn’t only due to my sitting posture. According to the doctor, it was the lack of height support that I got while working on my laptop.
Swapping out the painkillers for all my pain was a laptop stand. To those who aren’t familiar with laptop stands, a laptop stand is a stand that will make your workstation more ergonomic and comfortable to use, which is a simple and effective solution to all those aches and pains.
If you’re sitting at a desk right now with a laptop, you’re probably hunched over and tilting your head down to look at your screen, right? Now think about what is happening to your neck, shoulder, back ligaments and muscles as you strain them in this position for hours each day.
We at Painless Movement have advised and will advise you once more that when you’re working on a computer or a laptop, you should always keep the top of your screen to be about 2 – 4 inches above your eye level.
However, due to the nature of a laptop having the screen and keyboard connected, it’s nearly impossible to use a laptop at a desk with proper ergonomics. With a laptop stand, it will help elevate your laptop’s screen to your eye level making it more comfortable for you to view and use.
On the other hand, you will most likely need to purchase an extra keyboard and mouse because the laptop’s keyboard and mouse may be placed too high and uncomfortable to use. Stretch out and dangle your hands 6 inches above your desk, that’s where your laptop’s keyboard will be.
Depending on your needs and budget, you may choose to buy an extra monitor which is an expensive option, or simply go for a laptop stand. Take a look at my pick for the best laptop stands on the market.
1. Rain Design mStand360 Laptop Stand
Overall Rating: (5 / 5)
This stylish looking stand by Rain Design will look great sitting at your desk, while also holding your laptop at a good angle for ergonomics.
The Rain Design mStand360 can also swivel 360 degrees at its base, hence the name, which allows you to face your screen in whatever direction you want.
This laptop stand is crafted from a single piece of aluminum. It’s a solid frame of folded metal with a thickness of roughly 4mm giving it its stability and strength. The great thing about having it made from aluminum is that it helps to dissipate heat from your laptop more efficiently too, so you won’t have issues with your laptop overheating. There is also a circular hole on the back of the stand which you can insert your cables through to manage your cabling better.
Its build quality is on the high side. I did notice that this stand seemed to be designed primarily to work with MacBooks, but its design still works well for any non-apple laptop, so long as it isn’t deeper than 10.4 inches. The Rain Design also features rubber feet and 4 rubber pads on the top surface to stop your laptop from sliding around while you’re working on it. The rubber pads are 2mm thick and prevents metal to metal contact with your laptop.
Being able to swivel around to share what’s on your screen with others is a feature that is very handy. There is one downside to the mStand360 – it has no adjustable height options. If you’re the kind who prefers a stand with an adjustable height option, you might want to consider some of our options below.
2. Goldtouch Go! Travel Laptop and Tablet Stand
Overall Rating: (4 / 5)
This laptop and tablet stand will provide you with 6 levels of height adjustments which you can adjust to suit your needs wherever you’re working at.
The Goldtouch Go! Travel laptop and tablet stand is a versatile stand perfect for people who travel a lot. It is compact, lightweight and easy enough to stow away in your laptop bag.
The stand is made of aluminum and can hold laptops of sizes up to 17 inches. It feels very well built and sturdy too. What I really like about this stand is the portability, it can be stowed away in a carry-on bag for anyone that requires their stand on-the-go.
I would highly recommend the Goldtouch Go! stand for anyone who must travel frequently for work. One quick look at the reviews on Amazon and it isn’t too hard to notice people complimenting this stand’s size being perfect for travel, although many others use it for the office or the home too.
For such a lightweight and simple product, it offers a really ergonomic result for laptop use. Being able to prop your laptop a little closer to eye-level, and having the ability to adjust this height between the 6 levels, is a huge plus in our books.
3. Roost Laptop Stand
Overall Rating: (4.5 / 5)
Ever watched a boxing match which at first seemed so terribly mismatched, like David v.s Goliath, but David wins unexpectedly?
This Roost laptop stand is David. At first glance when fully opened with a laptop placed on top, it looks like a bunch of sticks trying to hold my laptop up. Surprisingly, however, even though the stand weighs only 5.8oz, it is extremely sturdy.
The Roost stand is one of the first extremely portable laptop stands, launched in June 2013 from a successful Kickstarter campaign. Its added rubber grips at the base and on the top will ensure that the stand and your laptop stay in place when in use. Even on a big, 17-inch laptop, the stand showed no sign of unbalance or shaky unsteadiness.
The Roost can be folded up very nicely and comes with a carrying case made from a familiar windbreaker material. Folded up, the Roost measures 1.2 x 1.3 x 13 inches and it’s easy to carry this thing in your bag.
The Roost is said to be very solid well built. According to the maker’s website, it is constructed from glass-fiber reinforced nylon, with a structural metal replacement polymer and mixed with a Delrin high-performance resin.
At first, I didn’t really know what they were trying to say, but when I researched what those materials were, I found out that in short – it’s just carbon fiber but without the expensive price tag.
When you first open the Roost up, you will see two rubber grips at the bottom which are meant to latch to the front of your laptop to secure it to the stand. I tipped my laptop with the stand to an angle of 45 degrees and the laptop still stayed on. Well done!
The Roost stand lets you adjust the height from 6 to 12 inches off the top of your laptop screen. A quick look on Amazon spotted reviewers saying that this stand’s height may be a little hard to adjust as it will require you to have both your hands available.
The overall quality is very good which may also be the reason for its steep price tag. If you need a stand that offers almost everything from ergonomics to portability, this may be the right stand for you and we think it’s worth paying a little bit extra for quality.
Before you buy, make sure to check out Roost’s compatibility guide to see if your laptop will fit their product.
4. Belkin Aluminum Stand & Loft
Overall Rating: (4 / 5)
Probably one of the simpler designs, this simple stand is designed to look minimalistic and complements the Apple MacBook’s design very well, with its color and texture as well as the curves and lines.
It is made of aluminum and if you want a simple stand that keeps your laptop in a sturdy and horizontal position, the Belkin Aluminum Stand & Loft will work well for you. The design elevates your laptop’s screen to your eye level and helps to keep your laptop cool.
Although the design is very simple, it’s doing a lot more than just simply holding your laptop up. There is plenty of airflow to keep your laptop temperatures cool, due to the open design while at the same time, a hole at the back of the stand that keeps all your cables organized and your desk clutter-free.
The rubber coated top of the stand will keep your laptop in place and still provide you with plenty of stability. The simple metallic design will blend in with most laptops and on an aesthetic level, this stand is among the best. There is also a lot of base space for accessories such as a keyboard or an external hard drive.
Weighing in at 1.65 pounds and built as a non-collapsible product, this stand will not be one that you bring out on your travels. This stand is made up of three parts – the upper part which holds your laptop, the bottom part and a piece of black colored plastic, which you can see in the picture that leaves an open space for your cables.
Also, people have commented that if you pick up the stand by its top, you might separate the top from the bottom half quite easily. The Belkin Aluminum Stand & Loft is designed for laptops with a size from 11 – 15 inches.
5. The Steklo X-Stand
Overall Rating: (4.8 / 5)
Simple, lightweight, portable and affordable – the Steklo X-stand is inexpensive when compared to other options. This stand lifts your laptop a few inches off your desk and keeps temperatures cool by allowing air to flow all around it.
This product is quite different from the other stands on our list. In general, the other stands are used to lift the laptop significantly higher off the table surface, in order to get the screen at a better height for better posture. The goal of the Steklo, however, is to place the laptop in a better position for your hands and providing a cool airflow to prevent overheating.
The tiny structure of the stand, therefore, will not work for those who need to elevate their laptop screen to your eye level. With a weight of 5.8 ounces, the aluminum stand is very portable for students and frequent travelers.
Most users recommend this stand as an affordable, portable option that will work well for almost anyone. It is said to be comfortable to work on and will support laptops ranging in sizes from 12 to 17 inches.
6. Griffin’s Elevator Stand
Overall Rating: (4.5 / 5)
Using the Griffin’s Elevator to hold your laptop, you could almost forget it was there. This minimalistic looking stand is a two-piece aluminum frame that is sloped so that your laptop is angled towards you.
Although the top of the stand has rubber strips to stop your laptop from sliding off, it also includes a couple of plastic pieces that you can attach to the front of the slope to stop your laptop from slipping off, if you’re feeling paranoid. These are optional though, but many users will add them for extra peace of mind.
The Griffin Elevator stand elevates laptops an additional 5.5 inches, and at the same time, its minimalist frame means that you gain a lot of desk real-estate underneath.
It will fit most laptops, both PC and Mac, and can easily be taken apart without any need of tools if you need to move around with it. It is considered among the sturdiest of all laptop stands, and can comfortably hold a 17″ laptop without losing stability.
We usually underestimate the number of hours we spend working on our laptops. To get our work done, we tend to neglect good posture and resort to slouching especially when we’re hard at work.
Not all of us are lucky enough to have ergonomic chairs and desks in the office or at home, so getting a laptop stand is a small investment that will benefit you in the long run. When buying the best stand that will suit your needs, it is important to look out for the durability and portability of the stand if you’re always on the move.
Cost is also one of the things that you should consider. Some stands may be very well built but comes at a pretty steep price tag. On the other hand, quality does come at a price.
It is also a good idea to match your laptop to the design and color of the stand. If you’re intending to go to a local brick and mortar store to purchase one, do take a snapshot of your laptop on your phone so that when you compare the stands, you can still match the designs and colors to compliment your laptop.
